I would like to share my personal experience when I went to the Whitsunday Islands. The Whitsundays are an archipelago, to some a tropical paradise. Many love them, some leave a bit disappointed. I have mixed feelings about it.
The islands themselves are not that special to me. Surely unique is the possibility of snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, right from the islands and the Whitehaven Beach.
Did you know?
The beach at the Whitsundays is so fine that it is used for grinding very sensitive things. For example, the glasses for space telescopes are ground with it. It is the finest sand in the world!

The photos of Whitehaven Beach are also unique and set certain expectations – especially the well known photos from the air of the Whitehaven beach – they all look gorgeous.
In the end, I think that the Whitehaven Beach is likely to be a lot better for us as it really is.
But please do not misunderstand: It is a beautiful beach, but pictures that have settled in our heads, probably raise the expectations a bit too high – yet: once you are there, you should pay it a visit.
I have to add, that I was there when the weather was cloudy – maybe also that’s there reason I was not that excited about it. All in all I just wanted to set the expectations right.
One last question: If you watch the short video above, which is mostly aerial shots, do you think it’s really that special if you are on the ground?
