The Principality of Hutts River is located in the north of Perth. If you travel up or down the west coast, you pretty much are driving by this infamous place. To get here you can just follow the road signs – or get the directions from the map below. Much of the road is not paved, however, you don’t need a 4WD to get there.
The Hutts River Principality is a farm that declared it’s independancy from Australia in 1970 and is now considered as pretty much it’s own state within Australia – even though it has not been officially recognized by any government. The beginning of independence was a dispute with the Australian government: The farmer, today’s Prince Leonard, should give land to the government. He successfully fought against it in court and declared the property of his farm to be independent. The Australian government had no choice but to recognize this based on the laws which were applicable back then.
To this date Prince Leonard really does not have to give any taxes to the Australian government or anything like that because he was able to legally defend his action. Even the Australian Post is required to carry letters with its stamps. The prince has also given political lectures at universities. Other farmers who attempted to copy his concept have landed in jail – so do not try this at home. 🙂
