The application for the Australian Working Holiday Visa is super easy to do with this guide and the screenshots below. Travel agencies often try to convince potential customers to buy one of their packages, which includes the application together with more services. We strongly recommend that you avoid these costs as you can do absolutely everything yourself without any problems.

Here you can apply for the Working Holiday Visa (click on “Apply now”). You can also print the visa confirmation there. To check your visa status, follow this Link.

Pay attention to the following points when applying.

Important things to note in the Working Holiday application for Australia

When should you apply for WHV?

You will usually receive the visa within 48 hours after you send your application. In the past over 75% of all applications were processed within 6 working days. However, make sure to submit your application at least 4 weeks before departure. It may take more processing time, e.g. because of a criminal record, a disease or the intention to work in the health care sector in Australia. For such reasons, you may need to submit additional documents (marriage certificate, medical reports, etc.). However, this should normally not be a problem.

What do you have to watch out when completing the online form?

Important: Enter your name and passport details exactly as they are shown in the valid passport with which you will enter Australia. The visa is linked to the passport number. If you still need to change the passport (because of loss, theft, etc.), you must inform the Australian Immigration Department in advance, otherwise you may be denied to board the flight. The airlines can see if you hold a Working Holiday Visa.

How and when do you pay for the visa?

The visa can only be paid by credit card before you finally send the online form. The current costs amount to 390 Australian dollars. Once you have opened a visa application, you will receive a Transaction Reference Number (TRN). With this number, you can always check the status of your visa or continue your application.

You sent the The WHV application. What’s next?

Now you only have to wait for confirmation of your visa. You will receive the confirmation by e-mail from the address evisa.whm.helpdesk@border.gov.au. Be sure to include your e-mail addresses correctly when completing. Make sure you print this e-mail! You need it to enter Australia, along with the valid passport, to which the visa is connected. Now you only have to enter Australia within 12 months.

The visa application form is only available in English. The entire registration process takes about half an hour.

Step 1: Open the URL of the Australian immigration department and create an ImmiAccount

Step 2: Create an Australian ImmiAccount

Creating the account is easy. Provide your security questions and tick the box to use your e-mail address as the username (otherwise, enter a different username).

Step 4: Passport information

Make sure that this information is exactly the same as shown on your passport. Otherwise you might be denied the flight to Australia.

Some details must be provided here only if you have received an Australian visa before.

Two questions at the end have to be answered with “no”, otherwise the visa will be rejected.

Step 6: Information about your professional career in your home country

If you choose “Health and Community Service” in the second question, you may have to undergo a medical examination to get the visa.

Step 7: Information about your place of residence in your home country

8. Information about your current location

If you want to receive mail, which you can get under certain circumstances, to another address, you can enter the place here.

Important: Enter your e-mail address here to process the application faster.

Provide the office of the nearest Australian office where you might be invited to. However, this is usually not necessary.

Step 9: Questions about “Health”

If you tick one of these questions with “yes”, it is likely that you are required to do a health check.

You will be asked if you have lived outside your hometown for the last 5 years. The need for a health check depends on where that was. It is not a problem if you were in North America or in most European countries. African states, however, could mean that you have to undergo a medical check-up.

Step 10: The “character declarations” could be the reason for a police certificate

If you answer a question with “yes” here, you may have to provide a police certificate. This does not automatically mean, however, that you are not eligible for the Working Holiday Visa.

Step 11: Confirmation of information for the Working Holiday Visa

Here you have to tick all questions with “yes”, in order to send the visa application successfully.

Step 12: Overview of all visa information

Here you have again the possibility to check all the information on your visa application. If you want to change your entries, simply click on “previous” at the bottom.

Step 13: Now you are ready to submit your visa application

After this step you have to pay the visa fee online by credit card. The visa will not be processed until the amount has been paid.

Apply for the Working Holiday Visa by mail

The Working Holiday Visa can also be requested by mail. However, this process takes several weeks, is more expensive (costs 80 dollars more) and is more complicated to deal with. Documents can get more easily lost with this method, which leads to further delays or a rejection of the application. We absolutely do not recommend this way, but would like to list it as well for completeness.

You can find the required form 1150 here. Send it together with a certified copy of the passport (data, photo and signature must be recognizable). You must send these documents to an Australian office outside Australia, e.g. to the Australian embassy in London:

Australian High Commission
Attention – Department of Immigration and Border Protection
Suite 100
43 Bedford Street
WC2E 9HA
United Kingdom

If you would like to apply for the 2nd working holiday year by mail, you must send the documents to the Cairns Second Working Holiday Center. The letter should be addressed to: PO Box 1269, Cairns Qld 4870. More information: www.immi.gov.au.

First of all thanks for this, it was the most helpful article that I’ve read.

So I have been in Australia a couple of months ago as a student (with a nationality passport), now I want to apply for my working holiday visa using my European passport. That is, I will apply with a different passport since the other one can’t allow working holiday visa.
Saying that y question is regarding the part where I need to answer if I have an Australian label in my passport and if I have a visa number. I’m a bit confused at this part since there were different passports.

    Thanks =)

      Hi! Thanks for the message.
I would not consider the other passport in your application – just the one you are applying with.
Be reminded that this is no legal advice, just our own experiences.
      Best regards,
      Travelgott

Yes, you can apply with the passport, however, consider that the US is not eligible for the standard Working Holiday Visa.

Hi Travelgott! I am finally applying for my WHV today! I am German/Nicaraguan but have never lived in Germany, so I don’t have a German Address that belongs to me. Do you think if I apply with my German passport but provide a Nicaraguan Address that may hinder my approval? What if I provide a German address that belongs to a German friend? Is that too risky? Please advise ASAP as I am applying in a couple hours! (( So nervoussss!!!)) Thank you!!! 🙂

Hi Travelgott! I also have a double nationality. I hold a German passport but was born and currently live in Nicaragua. Could I still apply to the Working Holiday visa to Australia with my German nationality? Do I need to provide an address in Germany? I would sooo appreciate an answer! Thank you! 🙂

Hi Gabriela! Nice, yes, you most certainly can apply for the WHV with your German passport, no problem. Just provide a German address… Have fun 😉

PS I just got back from Nicaragua… Loved it there!!!

Thank you for the article (: so I have a double citizenship for Germany and Austria – I live in Austria but have a German passport – it should still work right? And did you upload any documents that had to be stamped first? Like copies of your passport or birth certificate? Hope you can help, I’m very grateful for it 🙂 Anna
