The Sunnycrest Lane Rest Area is a free camping area located very close to Byron Bay: Only 12km from Bayron on the B62 right on the Sunnycrest Lane. At the rest area there is a sign that overnight camping is prohibited, however, we never had a problem and we spent several nights at this rest area.
During the day we drove to Byron and enjoyed the beaches. At night we drove those few kilometers to this camp spot - and never met any rangers. This rest area is a great spot to hide from rangers because it is not located at the main Pacific Highway but at the smaller freeway B62.

It is never wise to free camp in your car in Byron Bay. The city is cracking down on backpackers camping in vans and cars. It's definitely better to drive a few kilometers outside the town and sleep there. In a few minutes you can reach the town without hassles. There you can live the backpackers dream, with great showers, aweseome beaches, a national park and BBQs.
If you party in Byron, please do never drunk drive. Don't leave anything behind at the rest area, except your foot print.
